Bulky waste: getting rid of sofas, mattresses and appliances

What counts as bulky waste, your options for getting rid of it, and how to make the collection quick.

Bulky waste is anything too big or heavy for the household bins. It builds up in garages and spare rooms because getting rid of it is a hassle.

What counts

  • Sofas, chairs, wardrobes and tables
  • Mattresses and bed frames
  • Fridges, freezers, washing machines and dishwashers
  • TVs and large electricals
  • Garden furniture and old play equipment

Your options

  • Book a council bulky collection. Usually cheap, but often a wait of a week or more, with limits on numbers and items left outside.
  • Take it to the tip yourself, if you have a big enough vehicle and someone to help lift.
  • Donate it, if it is clean and in good condition. Upholstered furniture needs its fire safety label.
  • Book a collection with us. We come to you, carry it out and load it, usually the same week.

Making the collection quick

  • Tell us what there is so we bring the right van and enough people.
  • Clear a path to the items.
  • Mention anything awkward: stairs, tight corners, no parking.
  • Keep paint, chemicals and gas bottles separate. They need specialist disposal.

Single items start from £19 plus a collection fee. Use the item picker on our Waste page for an instant price.
