Skip hire or man and van?

For most household jobs a collection works out cheaper and easier than a skip. Here is when each makes sense.

Both get rid of the rubbish. The difference is who does the lifting, where the waste sits in the meantime, and what you pay for.

Skip hire

  • You load it yourself, over days or weeks
  • It sits on the drive, or on the road with a council permit (around £30 to £70 in Surrey, and you may need to wait for it)
  • You pay for the whole skip whether it is full or not
  • Good for a long renovation where waste comes out gradually

Man and van collection

  • We lift, carry and load; you do nothing
  • Nothing sits outside the house
  • You pay for the space you use, from a single item up to a full 14-yard load
  • Usually same week, often next day
  • Good for clear-outs, garden waste, furniture, end of tenancy and anything heavy

Cost

A 6-yard skip in Surrey is typically £250 to £320 plus permit. Our Large load holds about the same and is £210 plus a £59.99 collection fee, with the loading included. For anything less than a full skip, a collection is nearly always cheaper. For a six-week kitchen and bathroom strip-out, a skip can be more convenient, though many builders now prefer collections because nothing blocks the drive.

If you are unsure, use the item picker on our site. It gives a price straight away and you can compare it with a skip quote.
